On the topic of subtext though, the harsh light effect on Ruby's face probably isn't literal/physical as much as it represents a big internal realization. But also the same effect had been used earlier (volume 18?) when Ruby first encounters "true beauty" when he sees Wallace's contest performance with his Pokemon, and has no idea how Wallace reached such a skill level (the answer is Winona). Anyway I don't remember the light effect showing up anywhere else earlier but I could be mistaken.
