People start to get disappointed when they hear it. Some believe it's not real (and you could be right). However, fact still stand that it ain't really that different from the previous even generations. Gen 2 had 100 new pokemon, but 18 were related to older pokemon. Gen 4 had 107 pokemon, but 28 were related to older pokemon. And I ensure you, X and Y will have over 100 designs, however, you should realise some of those are mega evolutions.
And really, is it really that big of a deal there are going to be less pokemon? Sure, if this is the case, I still think they went a little overboard with the pre-release info. But in the end, we have to look how much the series has changed for the better. (or leave/skip a gen)
tldr; I'ld settle for less pokemon.
