I only learned the type chart, typings, and abilities because I started playing PVP in PBR. I then learned all moves, general stats, and hold items because I started playing on Showdown. There was 0 reason for me to actually learn any of this during the actual game except relevant bits of the type chart.
Incidentally I also stopped playing PVP during gen 7 and stopped being up to date with all the new moves and such.
