The Dugtrio/Arena Trap debacle was a really funny period for Smogon
Basically, Dugtrio used to be kind of niche because it was too weak to do its job. It had to do shit like Focus Sash + Reversal to get the job done.
Then it got the boost to attack it needed and became stall's golden boy, this especially because at the time Heatran was the foremost stallbreaker. So they suspect it.
Now here's where it gets funny. The majority was getting ready to ban Dugtrio until this happens.

So they decide to test Arena Trap instead, and while a few do see it as a transparent reattempt to ban Dugtrio, the people who begged for an Arena Trap suspect saw it as an opportunity to prove their point by using Trapinch and Diglet.
And I should point out, Diglet and Trapinch were nowhere near as good as Dugtrio. They were a meme, plain and simple. But the thing is their job, particularly on stall teams, usually just needed them to kill one particularly pokemon. A simple enough task, so they kinda sorta worked. And when everyone starting exaggerating about how Arena Trap made some LC Pokemon good, the majority decided to ban it. It was little more than a knee-jerk reaction.
That said, it was clear Dugtrio had to go one way or another so I'm not particularly annoyed with the outcome. I just think it's funny how big of a shitshow the whole thing was.
