If they ever do decide to go back to Johto they might as well just go balls to the wall with new ideas. It doesn't have to be a Legends style game specifically but something in that same spirit of telling a brand new story in a familiar region. Maybe the plot could be about you trying to help Celebi fix some Mandela effect broken timeline nonsense, which would be a convenient plot excuse for revamping Johto to include a bunch of
Spaceworld Beta Pokemon. Set it in a semi-modern era like the 80s or something. Put in loads of cool fankwanky moments like finally getting to face off against Falkner's dad that he never shuts fuck up about, or restoring the Lake Of Rage city. I dunno, they'd never do any of that shit but just do something cool and dumb, because they're not going to outdo Crystal or HG/SS.
