I really only enjoy Pokemon if it's funny, and XY is probably the worst in this regard. Team Rocket is at their blandest, and the 'bits' are terrible with Bonnie and Clemont. It feels so arbitrary and forced. It's so necessary to have a running gag that it doesn't even matter if it's funny, it's just cynically filling a quota.
I like Pokemon having cool battles and heartfelt moments, but the world of Pokemon is a goofy, stupid world. The increased emphasis on comedy has made fillers more bearable. Even when the jokes aren't so great, it's still charming. XY was dry, trite shit when the battles weren't happening.
