But at the same time we haven't seen how they'll handle characters like BW Cheren and SM Grimsley yet - that outcome would be a bit more indicating imo, especially since they aknowledged in-game how this Cheren is different from younger Cheren personality-wise.

It's literally the same character with the same personality. You make it sound like DeNa at some point randomly gave you a RBY or LGPE Brock with "sygna" in his name and tried to pass it off as the same character, which isn't what happened at all.
