Him falling on hard times from gen5 onwards and being shat upon since the dawn of XY only boosted those fantard tendencies. Of course, I have several other options that I cherish for one reason or another, such as Medicham and Ralts line due to proximity to my main bro - as it is easier from the long term perspective to endorse parallels rather than bitch about them.
Also keep in mind, OP, that bros are not written in stone - especially those childhood ones. I remember having top three bros in the form of Charizard, Mewtwo and Meowth, but as the time went on, my appreciation for them grew weaker until their slots ended up supplanted by Gallade. That doesn't mean that I dislike them in the slightest - rather, that I no longer consider them something to give much thought to as the week goes by.
