The Alola kids are completely ignorant of the Pokemon League and gym system. they genuinely don't know Pokemon types by heart and fall for shit like electric moves on Geodude. They also don't know about Mega Evolution and probably got the wrong impression from Brock that all gym leaders have it and it's nothing special.
what was fun about that episode was watching the country bumpkins learn about how big the world is beyond the islands and them getting a taste of pokemon league power
