Pokemon would never have existed without Toriyama. The original gen is practically a fan work. The art style, the eyes, most of the original dex is just redesigned DQ monsters.
Once, a long time ago a wide eyed, wonderstruck 5 year old discovered a series about traveling with monster friends because he happened upon the episode where Bulbasaur refused to evolve.
That 5 year old and the man I am now owe that defining experience to Toriyama just as much as Sugimori, Tajiri, and the rest of the team at Gamefreak. If you like anime or manga in any capacity you owe that entire facet of your personality to Toriyama's work in one way or another.
RIP to one of the all-time greats. I'm happy /a/ is keeping a longstanding thread up but he really should have stickies on /v/, /vr/, and /vp/ in my opinion as well.
