I think Greninja is awesome enough to get as big as Charizard in terms of Starters, but what many people forget is that Charizard came was at the perfect place and at the perfect time to become as big as it did: Pokemon was at its peak popularity and a global phenomena that was impossible to miss back then.
Nowadays, even if Pokemon is still beloved and known by most, the hype for it is only a mere fraction of what it used to be. No other Pokemon will ever stand on such a pedestal. The sheer fact that Greninja got as big as he did nowadays is particularly impressive, though. My guess is that Pokemon was still as big as back in the late 90's, he'd be on par with Charizard, even if hypothetical situations don't have much value to them.
