A good example of this perception is the later Mario & Luigi games when compared to Superstar Saga. While all the games follow a specific structure of where to go next, the world of the first entry is open enough so you can explore it at your leisure and even be punished/rewarded for it, while later games (mainly Partners in Time) got slammed by the fans for literally forcing you to follow a straight line with little to no exploration & secrets, just like a certain pokemon game people either love or hate (which IMO would describe Sun/Moon better than Black&White)
