My vote for best fire type is Volcarona. Its stats are great, it gets two useful STAB moves, plus good coverage, with access to reliable healing AND one of the best boosting moves in the game.
I've been able to use Mega Houndoom well as well. Switch it into a fire type that can't hit it, then use Nasty Plot when they switch out as you mega evolve, and then wreck.
