Even in the modern fairies Disney has portrayed Tinkerbell actually attempted to kill Wendy. Fairies aren't truly peaceful at all.
Fighting is a better representation of a Good/Justice/Heroic type, its even strong against the "Evil" type. And "evil fighting" is just another conceptual aspect of the Dark type. Fighting is the "pure" equivalent, and uses physical activity to test your strengths or to ward off the bad.
While "magic" and "light" are valid reasons for Fairies advantage against Fighting and Dark types, its also because Fairies are between the good and bad scale. Theoretically, fairies can assist bad guys to defeat the good guys, vice versa for the good guys against the bad guys even if the bad guys would have an even worser disadvantage.
