Is there still some imbalances in official play? Does VGC occasionally have shit years? Yes to both. But on the whole its way less of a clusterfuck than Smogon and has a way less obxoxious userbase. I don't hate Smogon, I actually respect it for supporting competitive Pokemon in the west during a time where TCP didn't give a shit, but things have changed since 2003. Smogon goes all this effort and time balancing a mode of play that was just meant for story mode, all to maintain a sense of community and power on the internet.
