The main villain was the most compelling and morally grey antagonist ever written in Pokemon, and even the red herring villain Guzma still had depth as to why he became a bad guy. Same with Professor Kukui, who actually shows up throughout the whole game instead of just appearing at the start and the end to hand you your starters.
