No. References used to mean something and actually be a positive thing for those who'd played the older games. This benefits no one other than manchildren pretending they were around during the series beginning. No game before Sun and Moon stoops this low trying to get a rise out of "critics" and Black and White were fantastic games for going all out in trying to have their own identity on top of being solid entries on their own merit.
