I did a test doodle, bipedal VS quadrupedal rattata - there's a pretty big difference. As for making him look sad, lowering his features - head, ears, tail - works wonders. Keep body language in mind, not just expression.
But I agree that drawing something from the front is just stupidly difficult. I used to have a TON of problems with it until I started on a project requiring me to draw stuff from the front a lot.
