I feel like they could have done the two sides of the same coin thing better if they went with Guzma's assertion that they both failed, yet Kukui sort of got past it and made his own way in life with Guzma left to rot in his petty failures. Instead Kukui goes "HA HA FUCK OFF LOSER I DIDN'T FAIL I QUIT" which just pisses off Guzma more and makes him more resolute in his villainy.
It kind of makes him come off as a bit of an asshole who makes no attempt to reason with or empathise with someone who is clearly mentally unstable, especially someone who was heavily implied to be physically abused (to be fair Kukui almost certainly didn't know this), although such concepts are probably too hard for the gook mind to understand hence why they went with the whole "I'm better than you deal with it faggot have you tried not being depressed" collectivist bugman angle that fails to have any insight as to why some people end up the way they do and how much of it is society's fault, hence why their suicide rates are so high.
I dunno, I'm probably projecting but it just didn't sit well with me.
