I think what sold me to Digimon and what Pokemon never really will have is meaningful relationships between monster and partner.
In Pokemon the monsters don't talk and don't have much freedom which means the best this franchise can do is rehashing that Charizard and Ash arc, its just them making up, thats it.
Because monsters in Digimon have actual personalities and character development as well as free will, they're essentially real people and can have as much depth to them.
