It had a lot of great concepts like the PSS, side modes and minigames, berry mutation, etc. that were never really expanded on because they dropped these games out of the oven early and decided to never look back in favor of drastically reducing how ambitious future titles would be.
I honestly would have loved to see a non-gimped Sun and Moon that didn't do a 180 from what Gen 6 built up. Even just from the gigaleaks and concept art it really felt like Gen 6 could have been the start of something amazing for the series. Instead, it became the black sheep and a signal of what worse things were to come.
