This franchise encourages you to buy extra hardware to get the complete experience, whether that be a Link Cable or(/AND) another copy outright. This is not by accident, it's by design.
The obsoleteness of Link Cables with the advent of wireless technology only further incentivized them to create more distinctions between versions so that people would want to experience both. It used to be things you could trade and collect all in one, now there's major differences in aesthetics, gameplay mechanics and even story between versions. Re-releases became entirely new takes on the story, and now they're just DLC outright. All of it is about getting you to spend more than simply buying one game and being satisfied, it always has been.
