This isn't like Pokemon where Ash, Female Friend who isn't good at battling but likes contests and shit and Other male character bumble the fuck around in the woods with one-off characters, until Ash gets a badge and inventively loses, the ONLY time this has changed is with Sun & Moon and that's arguably because Sun & Moon changed the gym format and is much more kiddie than the other ones.
