In my head, I have this fun mental image of a distant epilogue where Ash is 21 and while he hasn't won many championships, he's still regarded was one of, if not the very best Pokemon masters. Discovering new pokemon and whole new regions himself, etc.
But it's still not enough, his final test to be a master will be
going to a mountain cave and challenging his father Red.
