And linked to that Glailie is based on a Namahage, similarly ties to snowy regions of northern Japan, where folk lore goes that in the coldest part of winter kids who cry and make trouble will attract monsters to take them away and eat them. Winter festivals include adults dressing up as the namahage with straw coats, big monster masks, and butcher's knives. The masks are basically the only distinctive part of the costumes, hence Glaile just being a big head.
