I think everyone knows the obvious yuki-onna(lit."snow woman") being Froslass, but Snorunt's name is Yukiwarashi, same yuki:"snow" and the warashi is a pun on both "child" and "straw craft," and its specific shape is obviously the same iconic shape as old traditionally crafted hooded straw snow coats from northern regions of Japan. And linked to that Glailie is based on a Namahage, similarly ties to snowy regions of northern Japan, where folk lore goes that in the coldest part of winter kids who cry and make trouble will attract monsters to take them away and eat them. Winter festivals include adults dressing up as the namahage with straw coats, big monster masks, and butcher's knives. The masks are basically the only distinctive part of the costumes, hence Glaile just being a big head.
