I understand that that is not always the case, but I see no reason to assume "Hi" (Fire) + Nezumi (mouse/rodent/etc as you said) would be Harinezumi just because it makes sense also.
Not saying it *has* to have been intended to be a mouse, but it's certainly too ambiguous to tell for sure.
