The increasing importance of online identity has made censoring and punishing people easier through cancel culture, which has led to a greater divide between groups. The sad reality is that most of these people could genuinely chill and get along together, maybe even discuss relevant topics with the nuance those topics deserve, but the politicization of online spaces had made this impossible.
The Pokémon Clover debate could have been way more nuanced, but in the end it has just become "a war between RA vs 4chan". That's all the internet is about nowadays.
