Each gen has had its weak points, I think the bigger issue is the embrace of cartoony looks while not focusing as much on detail. It's the one thing I'll give people rampantly defending gen one as the absolute best, is that things like feathers, claws, etc actually got the detail they deserve back then or at least more frequently.
Even then though we still get good designs even past designs in an area have been poor. Keldeo is a joke of a horse mon but mudsdale feels just at home in pokemon as rapidash.
I don't think this is a trend that will change however. Kids may eventually look back at the gens that came before them and remark at how nicely drawn or sprited mons once were, but they may very well not. We all have our biases.
