The biggest problem in my book is they aren't designed as animals/objects/aliens but as characters, while there was some pokemon like that in gens 1-5 it felt like the 3ds era boosted it up going by the pokedex and how sobble's whole gimmick is how sad it looks. Looking at the alola dex lots would be more well suited for some gag manga/comic
