The kid was at his fucking peak with a solid team comprised of Pokemon from his entire journey, tons of experience from several regions and a Battle Frontier Campaign, he finally defeated Paul, and the next thing you know some Literally Who appears from the abyss and bitch slaps him out of the League with a goddamned Darkrai and Latios, which just goes to show just how competent of a trainer he was and how good his Pokemon were that they needed to pull THOSE cards to wipe him out, but at least he went out with some semblance of grace.
And if you stuck around after that, you got to watch the Pikachu that went toe-to-toe with said Latios get fucked by a Snivy that never had a battle with a trainer in its life before being used by someone who literally just became a trainer, and then after that Ash is an even bigger fucking moron than he was in Episode 1.
