if they don't feel connected then it doesn't feel like it really would evolve. at the moment it feels like two separate lines that happen to both be mexican dogs. All I'm saying is to add in some of the design elements from stages 2&3 into stage 1 so the transition feels more natural. It doesn't even have to be like pic related, but even just this would help a ton. Show that it's starting to lose hair in some places, add the red accents to the fur, maybe have it lighter red than stage 2&3.
