HG/SS are good games but definitely overrated, they had tons of content which is definitely respectable. But they barely fixed any of the issues of G/S such as terrible level curve, awful Pokemon distribution, Kanto feeling copy&pasted in and etc.
Gen 3 is awful, namely Hoenn. A lot of people hold the region to a much higher regard because it was a lot of peoples first introduction to the Pokemon series. The "too much water" complaint was a legit criticism that people meme'd.The region requires 3 water HM's and has water routes up the ass. Gen 3 also managed to keep a lot of the Pokemon related issues of the previous gen. Awful movepools and lack of Phys/Spec split (which sucks since they chose to be diverse with typings of Pokemon) and EV training is the hardest it's ever been in this gen.
EV training is one of the worst mechanics in Pokemon and each gen only puts duct tape over it instead of fixing it. It's overglorified grinding and it locks post game content/activities such as battle tree/maison, battle frontier and competitive battling from players behind a time and patience wall. "Are you willing to spend hours of your life to tediously grind patrats?" Pokemon is the only series that's allowed to get away with this awful game design, imagine if other RPG's had this. I'd rather the series just allow you to just manually edit what EV's and nature you want. No more tedious grinding, allows players to use the Pokemon they gained on their jouney in post game and makes post game activies more accessible to players.
Pokemon/Gamefreak is like a C average student. They do the bare minimum and you can't really call them out or criticize them for it since they always "pass". This pisses me off because Pokemon is like top 3 in Nintendo series, it's a world wide phenomenon yet it gets away with doing the bare minimum. It makes amazing sales all the time and it's no where near the standard of other RPG's on the market. It doesn't deserve all this success and praise.
