On the subject of index numbers, Venonat was designed first, and had a much bigger sprite. It was scaled down later. Venomoth is lumped in with a bunch of other evolutions that were designed later (a lot of which are from the same poll as Venonat actually) and Butterfree's line was designed a few numbers afterwards. Now, I don't know the exact dates on when the latter four were added, so they could have been added all in a bunch, and they could have decided Venomoth's design was better for Venonat's line before they were added or something, but looking at the actual evidence is interesting.
