Instead of throwing bullshit puzzles a 5 year old could solve, they actually tried to incorporate trails into the story, and give them actual personality.

Even the lack of some trials or the simplicity of others really spoke a lot for the situation in the story, the trial captain behind it, or the history of the region. Far more developed than any gym has ever been to the game's story/lore.
You don't like story in your pokemon game, go play fucking showdown or something.
