Recently did a Y wonderlocke, I didn't have any deaths after the second gym until the final rival battle in Kiloude, when my Pachirisu got killed by a crit hydro pump from Calem's Vaporeon. It was heartbreaking, and I did the post game with only five (hideously overpowered) pokemon, since it wouldn't of felt right to just replace one of the champs with a new guy.
