The problem is the series creators think just slapping a new protagonist onto a long running show by just changing their gender is enough to revitalize it's series content and carry the show. But gender is usually not enough if that's all that is done, regardless how much people delude themselves otherwise.
Doesn't matter if they're changed male or female. If the character is boring, the show is just gonna come off dull to watch.
