Mega gyarados has 95/107/130 defenses, and with Intimidate and Impish, you can take all sorts of physical hits. He is a talk in the true sense of the word and can 2HKO even bulky water types with Water Absorb like Gastrodon after a few DD, courtesy of Mold Breaker. Of course the dark type increases his weaknessess, but thats why you don't M Evolve until it is a good idea, ie not when your opponent has a mach punch over the horizon.
