I dunno if there's the same sentiment for Gen1 and 2, as their remakes also changed some character designs, with the newer ones being the canon representative ones (e.g. old and new Red, Gold and Ethan). At least it isn't retconned out of existence, as USUM acknowledged Archie and Maxie's RSE designs.
