I liked how "The Type Specialist" portrayed Ash. He's pretty dumb, rarely trains(and when he does it's inefficient), but he's got spirit and is pretty lucky with the bullshit maneuvers he comes up with on the spot working instead of backfiring. Maneuvers that his pokemon are able to follow up on because Ash is practically God's Chosen and has his pokemon literally buffed by God, letting even his untrained shitmons perform feats that would otherwise require a year or more of training.
But Ash still loses to people who know what they're doing, because God only gives Ash a 'Helping Hand', instead of a free win like he received in the Masters Tournament. Which is why Ash was destined to lose to Tobias in an 2-6 sweep, and why Ash lost to the protagonist in The Type Specialist, both people who trained for and earned their wins.
The battles are written better in The Type Specialist too, but that's true for all fanfiction vs Ashime writing since the Ashime had horrible writing.
