>>28140289The Marill line filled the role in the dex and Pokemon brand for Gen 2 that Pikachu did. It was a clear attempt to follow up on Pikachu before they decided "fuck it" and just actually rehashed Pikachu a bunch. You can't say he doesn't fit the pattern when he predates it.
"Pikaclone" is perhaps a slightly demeaning word, but it's definitely the Pikachu of Gen 2. They just gave more of a shit then to make it still stand on its own.
