They even have it as an episode title "the clash of ideals". N who wants to end cockfighting and free pokemon, Ash who is the ultimate tool of the league. But there is no clash in the actual episode, they completely dance around the issue when they could challenge Ash's ideas about battling and winning, by appealing to his care for his pokemon. And conversely N would also be challenged by the idea that a battling trainer could also care as deeply for pokemon as he does. They kinda do this, but it only falls flat.
