I end up having to backtrack all the way to the Capital since I haven't been given Fly or anything, surf to the northeast, end up at Brightbulb City.
In said city is Professor Joke, a none-too-bright professor who'll give a Pokémon to anyone who pretends to be a beginner. I store away a Pokémon, and he's ready to give one to me and another upstarting young trainer. A sailor won't let you go to part of the city until you get one.
He picks Chikorita, I'm left with only Totodile. After we pick, I'm challenged by him and his Chikorita like the rival fight in RBY, only I have my whole team.
After the fight, the young upstarting trainer reveals himself to be my rival Roland, and we have a real battle. (Kadabra/Starmie/Heracross/Marowak) He also was made to go here by the sailor and we laugh it off.
