>>42839972Now, aesthetically, Johto is without a doubt the worst dex.
Look at a fan favorite, the Cyndaquil line: an ambiguous, two-tone mammalian with flames on its back, standing on its hind legs, and having a simplistic body shape and features.
Totodile line, just about as popular, is a bipedal cartoon alligator with spikes on its back as its distinguishing features; the patterns on their bodies are a little interesting, but don't make up an important part of their design and don't change anything about what they are at base.
Furret is a two-toned tube. Noctowl is a horned owl.
Granbull is a bipedal purple pitbull with two spikes on its mandible and a natural collar.
Qwilfish is a pufferfish / blowfish.
Sunkern is a seed with a face and Sunflora is a sunflower with a smiley face.
Girafarig was altered / neutered from its original concept as a reflection to having a stupid chomper tail.
Octillery was supposed to be a tank, altered to be a turret, yet its only distinguishing feature is its bullet-hole-ish mouth.
Babymons, with only Elekid and Tyrogue having some deeper sense to their designs.
Ampharos, a yellow kangaroo with flaps for hands and stupid single nail toe.
Hoppip line, a random cutesy blob with a weed theme on its head.
And we can even look at more acclaimed designs and see just how unspectacular and overrated they actually are.
Tyranitar? Uninspired godzilla ripoff with a stupid mouth that can't even support its own typing in its design.
Lugia? Giant unidentifiable blob that looks more like a toy than a creature, with finger wings, randomly placed scales, and a stupid mouth.
Lantern? Virtually same deal.
Quagsire? Virtually same deal.
Ursaring? A big, bipedal cartoon bear with scruffy pauldrons and a circle on its torso.
You get the picture; they largely have nothing deep going on and are poorly drawn on top of that. And there's so few of them. The amount of choice you have if you care about aesthetics dwindles to so low.
