N is a Zoroark.
Probably a very special one that was so good at impersonating other species it forgot it was a Zoroark and got trapped in his human persona.
Then Ghetsis found him the wild, realized he could directly communicate with pokémon and adopted him to exploit his ability and carry his plan.
N is basically a Z sideways. Z was the symbol of Zororark in the marketing of gen 5 and the Zoroark movie.
N carries similar hair style to Zoroark.
N gives you a Zorua later.
N doesn't catch pokémon, he just befriends them momentarily and then they depart ways, that's why he always has a different team.
It fits that a Pokémon doesn't catch other Pokémon.
It also fits the moral of the story that he, being a Pokémon himself, propagates the message that it is actually ok and acceptable for human to train pokémon as a symbol of friendship. Coming from a pokémon that validates the message.
