>>48119993The real problem is that gimmicks are constructed to be easy to just leave behind each gen, rather than fundamentally upending the basic game play. The last real major, fundamental changes still being carried forward are the Physical/Special splits from back in Gen IV. The Gen about to receive a remake. They tried a few things in Gen V, such as more battle types, but they didn't catch on. And those are just a similar kind of "slap it on top of the core gameplay" gimmick. Double Battles is probably only still around because it's incredibly convenient for official tournament play.
They don't want to really rework how the battles function or the basic gameplay outside of that progresses, but they need something to push. So that results in easily appended, and just as easily discarded, gimmicks that are flashy and easy to advertise but functionally kind of ancillary. They could try more meaningful changes, but those might seriously result in less sales because the current formula is obviously popular. And adding it would be more of a pain, as would having to not carry it forward if it flopped.
