Game Freak are a Japanese developer steeped in Japanese pop culture. Hell, they're called GAME FREAK. They like video games, they like technology, they like scifi. Pokemon has had scifi elements in it since its inception. It's silly science fantasy, but that's part of the charm. A combination of Satoshi Tajiri's childhood hobby of chasing after bugs in the countryside and later obsession with video games in a rapidly urbanizing Japan. If what you saw in the latest trailer isn't something that at least partially interests you, I don't know what drew you in in the first place. Just because Pokemon managed to become popular worldwide doesn't mean it's not fucking Japanese as shit, especially when the franchise's flagship vidya series is still made by that relatively small independent dev team.
