Well... it's an on-rails experience in disguise. The truth is that SM and USUM don't allow the player any agency at all over their adventure. It's just "go from point A to point B to watch the next cutscene". When I first heard about how the Alola region would consist of 4 islands, I was so pumped and imagined myself surfing from island to island, getting lost and having a grand adventure in the seas. But in reality, the Alola map is just a straight line.
The freedom is long gone. There are no unique stories for the player to create and experience. The story is Lillie's, it's already set up for you and you're just there for the ride.
