>>35433163The companions are definitely quantity over quality by pokemon anime standards. Maybe it's because XY had less new pokemon to have to make filler episodes for, but there's quite a bit of filler, either full on episodes or episodes where only on important thing happens such as where Bounsweet evolves. The """""comedy"""'" can be summed up as [weird thing] [funny face] ["ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?!]. Having to constantly center events around the pokemon school because it's not a journey also lends to repetitiveness.
There's also the fact that the battles are pretty bad overall. Special mention goes to Lana's Popplio beating Totem Wishiwashi with Aqua Jet after a stronger Bubblebeam didn't work, Ash's Pikachu living a post-Belly Drum All Out Pummeling against Hala and Ash's Deus Ex Machina Asspull of 10000000 Volt Thunderbolt against Lusamine. That's one reason why Ash feels more kiddy this time around: his victories feel less legitimate and/or don't demonstrate expertise.
Pic related kind of summarizes how I feel about the animation. It's only Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket that bother me, and there's points where it looks really good, but it looks good in the same way those fluid stick figure battle animations look. I also feel that the animation quality is more sporadic, although there's less instances of miscoloration.
