>Both are JRPGs that take place in the (then) modern day, the 1990s, which was extremely uncommon>Both feature a mostly silent protagonist, a boy wearing a baseball cap>Both have a little bit of overlap in developers (certain members of Ape would go on to form Creatures)>There's the common speculation that Mewtwo was inspired by Gyiyg>Pokémon's map is far more concise than MOTHER's>Pokémon's monsters do have a visual hierarchy, with weaker Pokémon being smaller. Many (but not all) of their palettes on the SGB also hint towards their type which gives players useful information. Other than that, there are visual indicators for type like Vileplume resembling a plant or Kadabra and Alakazam having spoons and mystical appearances. No Pokémon seems to appear weaker as it evolves either.>Tajiri pretty much wrote the entire scenario for Gen I. Whether that includes all of the dialogue is unclear, but the games do a pretty good job at both adding color to their world and giving the player hintsThe first MOTHER is fairly sloppy in terms of design. When I first got to Thanksgiving and started encountering automobile enemies, Ninten began suffering from asthma attacks and I couldn't do anything but sit there and die. You get Lloyd around this point, but he's optional for now and getting him still requires you to level him up a lot so he can handle things Ninten can't. Duncan's Factory is one of those moments where I dropped the game. The swamp is also the point where the difficulty spikes again, and Holy Loly Mountain is completely unbalanced. Losing Teddy for your old underleveled Lloyd is also terrible.
