Alder is my 100% my favorite champion for the following reasons:
- Volcarona has beautiful design accompanied with intricate lore wherein it was once worshipped by the inhabitants of the former kingdom that is now the Desert Resort.
I love that attention to worldbuilding it makes this Pokemon more mystical as he is tied to a long lost culture of which only ruins remain.
- His design is complementary to his Acemon and the region. I love he has a poncho and his wild red solar hair is a beautiful addition to his main pokemon and to the region having that pre modern aura to it with its long lost kingdoms and permeating traditions within a modernised region.
According to Bulbapedia the reason why Alder keeps his reserve pokemon in the balls around his and back of his waste as he is actually too accustomed to the old method of carrying your extra pokemon with you than using the PC.
I tried to verbalise it as kindly as possible but the wiki says he is basically a boomer who does not understand PCs. I love that extra detail of him being a traditionalist it makes him stand out more. He probably does not even care for modern technology.
- I genuinely like his team, especially because of Bouffalant and Escavalier both of which are in my top 10 favorite Unova Pokemon. Vanilluxe and Druddigon are also very epic adn though they are odd choices I like the very unexpected selections he has. I assume they went three bugs because Pokemon was originally a glorified bug catching game from Japan and thus the champion of the rebooted region has half his team be bug type.
Bouffalant because it is American. Vanilluxe because wthat is a mememon but it fits the USA, milkshakes and all. Druddigon is an unorthodox choice but it fits since it is a Welsh dragon and it implies European ancestry to the nation of the USA.
Implying a sense of rootedness and tradition again tying back to how traditional Alder acts and looks
